Take-Two Interactive, the publisher behind the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, has announced it will lay off approximately 5% of its workforce and cancel several in-development games. The decision comes as a shock to the industry, especially given the soaring expectations surrounding the upcoming release of GTA 6.

The company, which is also responsible for other major franchises such as Red Dead Redemption and the NBA 2K series, stated that these changes are part of a strategic realignment aimed at strengthening its core operations and ensuring the success of its flagship titles. CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the layoffs in a press release early Tuesday morning.

“We are committed to delivering the best experiences to our audiences, and to achieve this, we must sometimes make difficult decisions to realign our resources,” Zelnick said. “We are incredibly grateful for the contributions of each and every one of our team members, and this decision was not made lightly.”

The layoffs will affect various departments within the company but are particularly concentrated in areas that were involved with the now-canceled projects. Details about the canceled games have not been disclosed, but insider sources suggest they included both new IPs and sequels in established series.

Analysts believe that Take-Two is refocusing its efforts on GTA 6, which has been one of the most awaited games since its announcement. The development of Grand Theft Auto VI has been closely watched by industry insiders and fans alike, with expectations that it could set new benchmarks for the gaming industry.

“Take-Two’s decision to consolidate its resources could be seen as a move to double down on GTA 6, ensuring that it lives up to the immense hype it’s generated,” said Alicia Carver, a gaming industry analyst at TechView. “However, the layoffs do raise concerns about the broader impacts on the company’s creative capabilities.”

The news has been met with mixed reactions online. While some fans are hopeful that refocusing on GTA 6 could mean a better product, others are expressing concern and disappointment over the job losses and what they signify for the company’s broader portfolio diversity.

The layoffs will begin taking effect at the end of the month, and the company has promised to offer support and severance packages to all affected employees. Meanwhile, the release date for GTA 6 remains on schedule, with more announcements expected in the coming months as the development progresses.
