In a significant victory for intellectual property enforcement, federal authorities have arrested a man accused of sharing an illegally obtained DVD rip of the 2002 blockbuster Spider-Man with millions of users on the dark web. The man, identified as 28-year-old Joshua Carter of Brooklyn, was apprehended late Thursday night following an extensive investigation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Motion Picture Association (MPA).
The movie, which was a major commercial success upon its release, was reportedly ripped from a legally purchased DVD and uploaded to various torrent sites and peer-to-peer networks, ultimately reaching millions of individuals worldwide. The distribution violated several federal copyright laws, and authorities say it represents one of the largest single pirated movie operations in recent years.
A Massive Piracy Scheme
According to the FBI, Carter’s illicit distribution operation began in late 2024 when he acquired a DVD copy of the Spider-Man film. He then used specialized software to create a high-quality rip of the movie and began uploading it to underground forums and piracy websites. The widespread circulation of the film resulted in millions of illegal downloads, according to estimates from MPA investigators.

In a statement, the MPA condemned the incident, calling it “a blatant infringement of the creative works that fuel the entertainment industry.” The organization emphasized the detrimental effects piracy has on the film industry, costing millions of dollars in lost revenue and undermining the hard work of filmmakers, actors, and production teams.
“Piracy remains one of the biggest threats to the entertainment industry, and we will continue to work with law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice,” said Charles Rivard, the MPA’s Chief Counsel.
Tracking the Trail of Piracy
Authorities were able to track Carter’s illegal activity by monitoring various piracy sites and using sophisticated data analysis techniques. The FBI reportedly traced the IP addresses of multiple individuals who had downloaded the pirated film and ultimately connected them back to Carter.
The investigation uncovered that Carter had been operating under several pseudonyms to obscure his identity and had used encrypted communication channels to evade detection. Despite his efforts, a coordinated effort by federal agencies, along with help from international law enforcement, ultimately led to his capture.
The Legal Repercussions
Carter now faces multiple felony charges related to copyright infringement, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and trafficking in counterfeit goods. If convicted, he could face up to five years in federal prison and significant fines. Legal experts have noted that the arrest serves as a reminder of the serious consequences associated with piracy and the increasing vigilance of authorities in prosecuting such crimes.
This case follows a broader trend of law enforcement cracking down on large-scale piracy operations. With the rise of digital media and streaming platforms, piracy has become a growing issue, with films, television shows, and video games often being distributed illegally long before their official release.
Industry Impact
The arrest also highlights the ongoing battle between the entertainment industry and illegal piracy operations. While streaming services have made content more accessible to consumers, the prevalence of illegal file-sharing networks remains a major concern. In response, the film industry has increasingly turned to digital rights management (DRM) technologies and other countermeasures to protect its intellectual property.
However, despite these efforts, piracy continues to thrive, with millions of users still seeking out illegal copies of popular films and TV shows.

“As the industry evolves, so too must our efforts to protect creators’ rights,” said Rivard. “This arrest is just one part of a larger strategy to ensure the future of the entertainment business remains bright and profitable.”
Carter is currently being held in federal custody pending a court appearance. His arrest has sent a strong message to the growing community of online pirates that law enforcement is committed to upholding intellectual property rights and cracking down on illegal digital distribution networks.
