Job search leaders Indeed and Glassdoor are cutting approximately 1,300 jobs in a sweeping restructuring effort, marking a significant shift in strategy as both companies double down on artificial intelligence to shape the future of hiring.

The layoffs, announced this week, represent about 6% of the combined workforce of the two platforms. Most of the affected roles are based in the United States, with some international positions impacted as well. Departments hit hardest include research and development, growth, and people and sustainability — all areas the companies say are being restructured to align with new technological priorities.

Indeed and Glassdoor are both owned by Japan-based Recruit Holdings, which has been aggressively integrating artificial intelligence into its products and operations. The move reflects a broader trend across the tech and recruitment industries as companies reallocate resources toward automation, AI development, and digital transformation.

In an internal message to staff, company leadership acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but emphasized the importance of positioning the businesses for long-term innovation. The message cited a need to adapt to rapidly changing market conditions and user expectations — particularly the increasing demand for personalized, faster, and more intelligent hiring experiences.

“This is a necessary step to ensure that we are building the best possible tools for job seekers and employers,” the message read. “AI is not a passing trend — it is redefining how people find work and how companies hire talent.”

As part of the restructuring, Indeed and Glassdoor will be more closely integrated. While both platforms will maintain their brand identities, core functions such as infrastructure, engineering, and strategic operations will be unified under Indeed’s leadership. This streamlining is aimed at reducing duplication of effort and accelerating the rollout of new AI-powered features.

Leadership changes will accompany the restructuring. Glassdoor’s CEO will step down in the fall, and Indeed’s Chief People & Sustainability Officer will also be leaving the company. Their responsibilities will transition to new leaders with experience in global operations, technology integration, and organizational change.

This is the third round of significant layoffs at Indeed since 2023, when the company cut over 2,000 jobs amid slowing hiring trends. Another 1,000 jobs were eliminated in 2024 as part of a broader cost-cutting initiative. The current reduction suggests a continued effort by Recruit Holdings to recalibrate its workforce and prioritize technology-driven growth.

The restructuring comes at a time when the job market is undergoing major shifts. While unemployment remains relatively low, the pace of hiring has cooled across several sectors, and companies are rethinking their recruitment strategies. Job seekers increasingly expect tools that are fast, personalized, and responsive — qualities that AI promises to deliver.

Indeed and Glassdoor plan to use AI to improve resume analysis, match candidates more precisely with job postings, and automate communication between applicants and employers. These advancements are expected to shorten the hiring cycle and increase user satisfaction on both sides of the platform.

Despite the job cuts, Indeed is continuing to invest in long-term initiatives. The company is opening a new co-headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, by the end of 2025, underscoring its ongoing commitment to growth and innovation.

Employees affected by the layoffs will receive severance packages, extended benefits, and job placement support. Leadership emphasized their gratitude for the impacted workers’ contributions and pledged to support them through the transition.

The restructuring highlights the growing influence of artificial intelligence not only on job seekers and hiring managers but also on the very companies that help connect them. As the recruitment landscape evolves, Indeed and Glassdoor are betting that a leaner, AI-powered approach will help them remain leaders in a highly competitive market.
