In a surprising and candid admission, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that the company may have “dug our own grave” with the bold and futuristic Cybertruck. Musk’s remarks came during a recent interview at Tesla’s headquarters in Palo Alto, California, where he reflected on the challenges and controversies surrounding the company’s groundbreaking electric pickup truck.

The Tesla Cybertruck, unveiled in 2019 with its polarizing, stainless steel, and geometric design, has been a subject of intense scrutiny, debate, and anticipation ever since. While it garnered a tremendous amount of attention and pre-orders, it also faced skepticism and criticism from traditional truck enthusiasts and automotive experts.

Musk, known for his unwavering confidence and determination, seemed unusually reflective during the interview. “The Cybertruck is a really tough one for us. I think we maybe dug our own grave with that one,” he admitted. “We designed it to be super futuristic and unique, but it’s turned out to be a love-it-or-hate-it proposition.”

Musk Says Tesla 'Dug Our Own Grave' With The Cybertruck

One of the major challenges facing the Cybertruck has been its design. The vehicle’s unconventional appearance, which Musk affectionately described as “a low-poly count video game truck,” has alienated some potential customers who favor more traditional and familiar truck designs.

Moreover, Tesla has faced production delays and difficulties in bringing the Cybertruck to market. The company originally planned to start production in 2021 but has had to push back the timeline several times. The latest estimate for production to begin is 2023.

The Cybertruck’s price has also raised eyebrows, with its entry-level model starting at $39,900, but more premium versions reaching well over $70,000. This pricing places the vehicle in a segment with established competitors like Ford’s F-150 and the Rivian R1T, making it a tough sell for some consumers.

Despite these challenges, Musk maintains that the Cybertruck will find its niche. “It’s a tough vehicle. I have no doubt about that,” he said. “But I believe that, over time, people will come to appreciate its uniqueness and capabilities. It’s a bit of a ‘Blade Runner’ truck, and that’s why I love it.”

Elon Musk deems new Cybertruck a 'production candidate'

While Musk admitted to the challenges posed by the Cybertruck, he also emphasized that Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy remained unchanged. He pointed to the positive response to Tesla’s other vehicles, like the Model 3, Model Y, and forthcoming products like the Tesla Semi and the Tesla Roadster.

In conclusion, Elon Musk’s candid remarks about the Cybertruck underscore the difficult balance that Tesla has had to strike between innovation and consumer appeal. As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, only time will tell if the Cybertruck will find its place in an increasingly competitive field. Despite the obstacles, Musk remains optimistic about the vehicle’s future, and Tesla enthusiasts eagerly await the day they can drive this “Blade Runner” truck on the open road.
