Amazon has announced that it will shut down its ad-supported streaming service Freevee in August 2025. The company plans to consolidate Freevee’s content into Prime Amazon is moving to consolidate its streaming services by integrating Freevee into Prime Video, bringing all of its video content—both free and subscription-based—under one umbrella. The decision marks a significant step toward simplifying Amazon’s entertainment ecosystem and improving the user experience by streamlining access through a single platform.

Freevee, which originally launched as IMDb TV, served as Amazon’s free, ad-supported streaming service. Over time, it built a sizable audience by offering a vast library of free content, including well-known series, movies, and a lineup of original programming. Titles such as Jury Duty, Bosch: Legacy, and Judy Justice helped establish the service’s identity and attracted a loyal viewership.

As part of Amazon’s updated strategy, the standalone Freevee app will be retired in August 2025. From that point forward, all Freevee content will only be available through the Prime Video app, where it will live in a new, dedicated section called “Watch for Free.” This area will provide access to ad-supported content at no cost, even for users who do not have a Prime membership.

The move is intended to remove the friction that comes from managing multiple apps and interfaces, offering both free and premium content in one cohesive experience. By doing so, Amazon hopes to make it easier for viewers to explore and enjoy the full range of its streaming offerings, regardless of whether they pay for a subscription.

Freevee users will be notified about the upcoming changes through in-app messages and are encouraged to transition to the Prime Video app ahead of the official shutdown. Amazon has reassured viewers that all existing Freevee content—including original series and live channels—will remain available and will continue to be updated, just within a new home.

This change also reflects a broader shift occurring across the streaming industry, where companies are increasingly consolidating services in an effort to reduce operating costs, eliminate redundancy, and provide more streamlined experiences. Rather than maintaining separate platforms for ad-supported and paid content, major players like Amazon are finding value in unifying their streaming catalogs.

Amazon to shut down Freevee streaming service in August

From a strategic standpoint, the integration of Freevee into Prime Video allows Amazon to strengthen its position in the competitive streaming market by creating a centralized destination for both free and paid entertainment. The company’s decision to retire Freevee as a standalone service is less about eliminating content and more about refining the delivery method.

Although the Freevee brand will be phased out, its legacy—and its popular content—will continue to thrive as part of Amazon’s expanding ad-supported offering within Prime Video. For viewers, this means easier access, fewer apps to manage, and a smoother overall streaming experience.
