According to insider sources, Microsoft approached Apple with an unprecedented proposition to offload Bing, its search engine, during high-level discussions between the tech giants in 2018. The offer, reportedly valued at a substantial amount, aimed to integrate Bing as the default search engine on Apple devices, replacing Google’s widely-used search engine.

The deal, had it materialized, could have reshaped the dynamics of the search engine market and challenged Google’s dominance in the space. Apple, known for its stringent quality standards, expressed interest in diversifying its partnerships but eventually opted to retain its existing collaboration with Google.

One of the primary reasons cited for the breakdown of the negotiations was the perceived search-quality issues associated with Bing. Google executives reportedly raised concerns about Bing’s ability to deliver search results at par with Google’s renowned accuracy and relevance. Apple, known for its commitment to delivering a seamless user experience, was hesitant to compromise on the quality of search results.

While specific details of the proposed deal remain confidential, sources suggest that Microsoft’s willingness to part ways with Bing was driven by the search engine’s struggle to gain significant market share and profitability compared to Google.

In response to inquiries, representatives from Microsoft neither confirmed nor denied the reports, stating that the company continually explores strategic opportunities to enhance its business. Meanwhile, Apple declined to comment on the specifics of the discussions.

Industry analysts speculate that Microsoft’s move to sell Bing could have been influenced by its focus on other lucrative ventures, such as cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The search engine market has long been dominated by Google, with Bing and other competitors struggling to capture a substantial user base.

This revelation sheds light on the intricate behind-the-scenes negotiations among tech giants and underscores the competitive nature of the industry. As Google maintains its stronghold on the search engine market, Microsoft continues to explore alternative avenues for growth and innovation. The failed deal between Microsoft and Apple serves as a reminder of the challenges in disrupting the established order in the tech world.
