Google has announced that it will be shutting down its VPN by Google One service, marking an end to the tech giant’s foray into virtual private network offerings. The service, which was initially launched to provide added security for users on public or unsecured networks, will cease operations by the end of July 2024.
Introduced in late 2020, VPN by Google One was part of an enhanced Google One subscription plan that offered a range of services including extended cloud storage, premium support, and additional member benefits. The VPN service was designed to safeguard users’ online privacy by encrypting internet traffic and masking IP addresses.

According to Google’s official statement, the decision to discontinue VPN by Google One comes as the company refocuses its efforts on core products and strategic new technologies. “As part of our ongoing commitment to streamline our services, we have decided to discontinue VPN by Google One. We’re immensely proud of what we achieved with the VPN service and are grateful to our loyal users,” said Sarah Bridges, VP of Google One Services.
The announcement has left many current users concerned about their online security, especially those who relied on the VPN for safe browsing on less secure networks. Google has assured its users that it will be offering guidance on alternative solutions. “We are committed to helping our users transition smoothly and maintain their online privacy. Over the next few months, we will provide resources and recommendations for other reputable VPN services,” Bridges added.
The tech community has reacted with mixed feelings to the news. While some industry analysts suggest that the VPN market is overly competitive and perhaps not a core business area for Google, others believe that privacy tools are increasingly vital.

“Google’s exit from the VPN space might streamline their offerings, but it also raises questions about the broader implications for consumer privacy services offered by big tech companies,” commented Dylan Reeves, a cybersecurity expert.
VPN by Google One users will no longer be charged for the service starting June 2024, and Google plans to offer prorated refunds to those who paid for annual subscriptions. The company also highlighted that other Google One benefits, including premium support and additional cloud storage, would remain unaffected.
As Google phases out its VPN service, users are advised to explore alternative VPN solutions to ensure continued protection of their online activities. The company stated it remains deeply committed to user privacy and security across all its products and services.
