In a remarkable display of ingenuity and dedication, 14-year-old Alex Thompson from Maplewood has been awarded $10,000 for his award-winning investigative project on train derailments. Alex’s investigation began as a school project, sparked by a news report about a recent train derailment in a nearby town. Driven by curiosity and a desire to make a difference, he decided to dive deeper into the topic. Over several months, Alex collected data from the Federal Railroad Administration and various safety reports, analyzing trends and patterns in train accidents across the country.

His research revealed alarming insights: between 2015 and 2022, the number of train derailments had increased by nearly 20%. Most notably, Alex discovered that a significant percentage of these incidents were linked to outdated infrastructure and inadequate maintenance. His findings highlighted the need for increased investment in railway safety measures and sparked discussions among local lawmakers.

“I wanted to understand why these accidents were happening and what could be done to prevent them,” Alex explained in an interview. “I hope my research can help bring more attention to this important issue.”

The culmination of his work was presented at the National Young Innovators’ Competition, where his project was not only well-received but also garnered the prestigious first place award. The $10,000 prize money is intended to further support his education and future research endeavors.

Judges praised Alex’s thorough methodology and impactful conclusions. Dr. Emily Rodriguez, one of the competition judges and a leading researcher in railway safety, stated, “Alex’s work is impressive for someone his age. He has the potential to influence policy and drive real change in railway safety.”

As Alex prepares for high school, he remains committed to his research. He plans to collaborate with local transportation agencies to present his findings and advocate for necessary changes. “I believe that even a small voice can make a big impact,” he said.
