In a move that has stirred controversy, Meta Platforms Inc. is facing intense backlash after reports revealed that its algorithm had automatically made some Facebook users follow former President Donald Trump and Ohio Senator J.D. Vance. Additionally, Meta’s Instagram platform has come under fire for allegedly blocking hashtags related to the Democratic Party, including #Democrat and #DNC.

The controversy began late last week when users took to social media to express their confusion and frustration upon discovering that their Facebook accounts had started following both Trump and Vance without their consent. Many users were startled to find themselves following high-profile figures known for their conservative views, despite not having any history of interacting with such accounts.

“I was just scrolling through my feed when I saw that I was following Trump again. I never chose to do that. It was like my account was hijacked,” said Maria Jensen, a Facebook user from Chicago. “This feels like an invasion of privacy, and I’m not alone. A lot of people are upset.”

While some users initially suspected a glitch in Meta’s systems, it soon became clear that the follows were not accidental. Investigations into the issue revealed that Meta’s algorithm, designed to promote content that it deems relevant based on user preferences and engagement, had mistakenly made these accounts default follows for certain groups of users.

Meta Responds to Criticism

Meta has since acknowledged the error, issuing a statement late Friday night. The company explained that a recent update to its recommendation algorithm had led to unintended behaviors, causing users to automatically follow certain political figures like Trump and Vance based on inferred user interests. The company has promised to roll back the update and provide users with the ability to remove any unwanted follows with a single click.

Meta set to make divisive decision on Trump's return to Facebook

“We deeply regret any confusion or frustration this has caused,” Meta’s Chief Technology Officer, Amit Patel, said in a statement. “We are working to resolve the issue and are actively reviewing our recommendation systems to ensure they reflect user preferences more accurately and ethically.”

However, this explanation has done little to quell the growing discontent. Critics argue that the situation highlights deeper concerns about Meta’s handling of political content and its potential role in influencing elections and political discourse.

Instagram Blocks Hashtags Related to Democrats

In a separate but related incident, users on Instagram have reported that hashtags like #Democrat and #DNC are being blocked or restricted, preventing them from being used in posts and stories. This has led to accusations that Meta is attempting to suppress political speech related to the Democratic Party.

Several prominent Democratic activists and organizations have voiced their concerns, with some accusing Meta of bias. “This isn’t just an oversight – it’s censorship,” said Alex Hernandez, a social media strategist for a progressive political action committee. “Blocking #Democrat and #DNC during an election year is dangerous, especially when the platform is already so influential in shaping public opinion.”

While Meta has not confirmed the specific reasons behind the blocking of these hashtags, experts speculate that it could be tied to the company’s ongoing efforts to crack down on misinformation and political manipulation. Some have raised concerns that Meta’s algorithms are disproportionately impacting certain political ideologies, leading to an uneven playing field for users across the political spectrum.

Public Outcry and Calls for Accountability

The incidents have sparked renewed calls for regulation of social media platforms, with lawmakers and advocacy groups pushing for greater transparency in how companies like Meta manage political content. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), a vocal critic of Big Tech, called for an investigation into Meta’s practices.

“This is another example of how Big Tech companies have too much unchecked power,” Warren said in a statement. “Meta must be held accountable for actions that undermine the democratic process and violate user trust.”

Social media experts are also sounding alarms about the ethical implications of algorithms that automatically alter users’ experiences without their consent.

Meta had to 'bend the knee to Trump' ahead of inauguration

“Algorithms like the ones Meta is using can significantly alter political opinions and behavior,” said Dr. Lisa Reynolds, a professor of political science at Stanford University. “When a platform like Facebook makes political decisions for its users, it undermines the very foundation of free choice and democratic engagement.”

Looking Ahead

As of today, Meta has not provided a timeline for when the issues will be fully resolved. In the meantime, users are left navigating a platform that some feel is making political decisions on their behalf. Whether Meta can restore user trust and avoid further backlash will likely depend on how quickly and transparently it addresses these concerns in the coming days.

While Meta has long been a target of scrutiny for its handling of political content, the latest controversy has brought the issue to the forefront once again. As the company grapples with the fallout, it remains to be seen whether it can repair its relationship with users and avoid further incidents that may damage its reputation.
