Anti-Trump Searches Appear Hidden on TikTok After App Comes Back Online: ‘TikTok is Now Trump’s Propaganda’

TikTok, which had been temporarily unavailable for several hours earlier this week due to what the company described as a "routine maintenance" issue, came back online on January 21, 2025, with new reports of content manipulation emerging almost immediately.

Following a temporary outage, TikTok users are reporting that searches and content critical of former President Donald Trump appear to be hidden or suppressed on the platform. The controversy has sparked renewed debates over the app’s role in political discourse, with critics accusing the platform of skewing content to align with Trump’s political narrative.

A Sudden Shift After the Outage

TikTok, which had been temporarily unavailable for several hours earlier this week due to what the company described as a “routine maintenance” issue, came back online on January 21, 2025, with new reports of content manipulation emerging almost immediately.

Social media users, particularly those who have long used the app as a space for political expression, have claimed that when searching for terms like “anti-Trump,” “Trump’s lies,” and “January 6th insurrection,” results now show significantly less content or return no results at all. These shifts have led to accusations that TikTok, under increasing pressure from political elites and advertisers, is altering its algorithms to suppress anti-Trump content.

The ‘Trumpification’ of TikTok?

“I used to see plenty of posts calling out Trump for his lies or criticizing his actions. But now, it’s like they’ve disappeared entirely,” said one TikTok user, who goes by @WokeAndAwake. “It feels like TikTok is turning into Trump’s propaganda tool. It’s not even subtle anymore.”

The concerns over content suppression have been raised alongside growing fears about the broader influence of tech giants on political speech. Critics argue that TikTok, owned by the Chinese tech company ByteDance, has been influenced by geopolitical pressures and concerns about how the app might be used in the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election.

Several social media analysts have pointed to the app’s algorithmic shifts, noting that even when searching for content related to Trump’s controversies or inflammatory statements, users are now seeing a marked increase in pro-Trump content or vague “neutral” results. TikTok’s “For You” page, which tailors recommendations based on user behavior, is also reportedly pushing content in a more favorable light toward the former president.

Influence of Political and Corporate Interests

“The fact that pro-Trump content is suddenly so visible while anti-Trump voices are harder to find suggests a realignment of the platform,” said Dr. Selena Harper, a social media researcher and professor of communications. “TikTok has long faced questions about its algorithms, but now we’re seeing a dangerous intersection between political power, corporate interests, and platform moderation.”

Earlier this month, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew faced congressional hearings where lawmakers pressed him on issues ranging from data privacy to the platform’s potential manipulation by the Chinese government. While Chew denied any foreign interference, many observers suggest that the political pressure on TikTok, including concerns about its role in shaping U.S. elections, could be influencing the platform’s content curation practices.

Reactions from Pro- and Anti-Trump Users

While critics decry the alleged algorithmic shift, some pro-Trump users have celebrated the apparent changes, claiming that TikTok is finally offering a more balanced portrayal of the former president and his supporters. One such user, @MAGA_Vibes, posted: “Finally, Trump’s truth is being heard! No more censorship from the left. TikTok is a victory for patriots.”

But many others are accusing the platform of bias and manipulation. Users who support Trump’s opponents argue that these changes underscore a troubling trend where large corporations, whether through algorithmic design or corporate sponsorships, influence public opinion and political discourse on social media platforms.

Why Trump's new love of TikTok is dangerous

“TikTok is turning into the mouthpiece of a political agenda, and it’s not the one I agree with,” said @NoMoreSilence, a prominent anti-Trump TikTok creator. “If they’re suppressing critical conversations about Trump, how can we trust that the platform is truly neutral?”

Platform’s Official Response

TikTok has yet to respond officially to the controversy, but a spokesperson told reporters that the company is “committed to maintaining a fair and transparent platform where users can express diverse viewpoints.”

“We continually update our algorithms to provide the most relevant and engaging content to users, but we do not censor political speech,” the spokesperson added. “We are investigating any potential issues related to search results and will address them accordingly.”

What’s at Stake?

The growing concerns about TikTok’s handling of political content come at a time when the app is becoming increasingly central to political communication and activism. With millions of users, especially younger voters, flocking to TikTok for news, entertainment, and political commentary, the platform’s influence on shaping political narratives has never been greater.

As the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaches, questions about TikTok’s role in moderating and promoting content could have far-reaching implications for how campaigns communicate with voters. For now, though, the controversy over anti-Trump content serves as a reminder of how easily social media platforms can become battlegrounds for ideological warfare—and how algorithmic changes can shape the political landscape.

Whether or not TikTok is actively suppressing content critical of Trump remains unclear, but one thing is certain: users will continue to scrutinize the app’s role in political discourse as it evolves in the lead-up to the next election.
