The Treasury Department’s Office of Inspector General has also initiated a separate review focusing specifically on DOGE’s role in the government’s payment infrastructure.

Elon Musk’s controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is now the subject of multiple federal audits amid growing concerns over data security, transparency, and the influence of private interests in public administration.

Originally created to streamline and modernize federal operations, DOGE has been working closely with key departments such as the Treasury, Labor, and Education. However, questions have surfaced regarding the team’s access to sensitive government data and their adherence to federal cybersecurity protocols.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has launched a comprehensive audit to investigate DOGE’s practices, particularly its involvement in evaluating large-scale federal payment systems and social service programs. Critics point out that several DOGE team members have strong ties to Musk’s private companies and lack traditional experience in public service, raising ethical and operational red flags.

The Treasury Department’s Office of Inspector General has also initiated a separate review focusing specifically on DOGE’s role in the government’s payment infrastructure. Officials are investigating whether DOGE had unauthorized access to systems used to distribute benefits and handle taxpayer funds. There are also allegations of irregularities in payment processing, including claims that billions of dollars may have been disbursed to unverifiable recipients.

Public response to the audit has been mixed. While some support Musk’s involvement in bringing private-sector efficiency to bureaucracy, others are alarmed by what they see as unchecked influence and potential misuse of federal resources. A recent poll conducted on social media showed overwhelming support for auditing federal agencies—ironically, using DOGE itself—highlighting the deep public distrust of government institutions.

Meanwhile, several lawmakers are demanding answers. Concerns have been raised in Congress about whether DOGE’s operations violate federal guidelines on data privacy and financial oversight. Some have called for a temporary suspension of DOGE’s access to government systems until the audits are completed.

The controversy adds to a string of legal and regulatory battles surrounding Musk, who recently claimed to have uncovered massive fraud within federal payment systems. While no official findings have supported that claim yet, the audits could be a turning point in determining the legitimacy and future of DOGE.

As investigations continue, the outcome may have broader implications not only for Elon Musk’s role in government but also for how the public and private sectors collaborate in managing national infrastructure and services.
