Artificial intelligence may be on the brink of triggering one of the most disruptive labor shifts in modern history. According to researchers at Anthropic, a leading AI safety and development company, the next decade could be “pretty terrible” for a significant portion of the global workforce—particularly those in white-collar professions.
The warning stems from the rapid evolution of generative AI, which is increasingly capable of performing complex tasks traditionally handled by humans in corporate, administrative, legal, financial, and creative sectors. From drafting legal memos and writing code to creating marketing campaigns and conducting data analysis, AI is now proficient at a range of cognitive functions that were once exclusive to college-educated professionals.
Anthropic researchers are particularly concerned about the impact on entry-level white-collar positions. These jobs—often filled by recent graduates and early-career professionals—are essential stepping stones in many career paths. But because they often involve routine, repetitive, or document-heavy tasks, they are proving especially easy to automate. In short, the career ladder could be losing its first rungs.
Internal models and forecasts suggest that up to 50% of these roles could be eliminated or dramatically transformed within the next five years. If that pace holds, unemployment among white-collar workers could rise sharply, and a growing number of professionals may find themselves unable to compete with machines that never tire, never ask for raises, and operate at near-perfect accuracy.
What makes this threat unique—and troubling—is that it targets a segment of the workforce that has historically been shielded from automation. In previous technological revolutions, manual labor and routine manufacturing jobs bore the brunt of disruption. Today, it’s accountants, legal clerks, junior marketers, and even software engineers who are seeing their work increasingly replicated by algorithms.
Anthropic’s researchers emphasize that the world is woefully unprepared for this shift. Educational systems are not evolving fast enough to equip future workers with AI-native skills. Governments are lagging behind in developing regulatory frameworks or social safety nets to soften the blow. And most businesses are more focused on short-term efficiency gains than on the long-term socioeconomic consequences of cutting human labor.
The researchers stress that this isn’t just a job market issue—it’s a societal one. A sudden, large-scale reduction in meaningful employment could have cascading effects: weakened consumer spending, mental health challenges due to job displacement, and rising inequality as those who control AI technologies accumulate more power and capital. It could also destabilize the middle class, a backbone of democratic societies.

Some technologists argue that AI will eventually create new roles—roles that are more creative, strategic, and fulfilling. But Anthropic’s team points out that this optimistic view often ignores the transition period, which could span a decade or more. During that time, millions may find themselves caught in a widening gap between the jobs that have disappeared and the jobs that have yet to be created.
Solutions have been proposed—universal basic income, mass retraining programs, incentives for companies to preserve human labor—but none are currently in place at the scale needed to meet the looming challenge. Anthropic believes now is the time for serious public discussion and coordinated policy action.
While the researchers are not anti-AI—in fact, their work aims to align advanced AI systems with human values—they are urging caution. The next generation of AI could be immensely beneficial, but without proactive management, it also risks being profoundly harmful.
