Apple is reportedly exploring a major move in the artificial intelligence space, with internal discussions underway about the possible acquisition of Perplexity, a fast-rising AI-powered search startup. The move, if pursued, would mark a significant shift in Apple’s strategy around search, voice assistants, and AI integration across its ecosystem.

According to sources familiar with the matter, senior Apple executives have held early-stage talks about the potential of acquiring Perplexity to accelerate the company’s capabilities in generative AI and conversational search. The discussions are said to be preliminary, with no formal offer extended and no direct contact initiated with Perplexity’s leadership. However, the interest signals Apple’s growing recognition of the shifting dynamics in search and AI-driven user experiences.

Apple Considers Buying AI Startup Perplexity

A Strategic Play in Search and AI

Perplexity has gained considerable traction in recent years as an alternative to traditional search engines. Its AI-powered platform allows users to ask questions in natural language and receive clear, citation-backed responses instead of a list of links. This model of “answer-based” search aligns closely with the current trend of using AI to provide more direct, context-aware information — a model already being pursued by competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.

Apple’s interest in Perplexity is likely driven by a desire to embed such technology more deeply into its products. Integrating Perplexity’s conversational AI into Safari, Siri, and Spotlight Search could reduce Apple’s long-standing dependence on third-party search engines and enable a more seamless and private experience for users. It would also align with Apple’s on-device processing philosophy, focusing on user privacy and performance.

AI Momentum Inside Apple

The internal exploration of Perplexity follows Apple’s broader push into artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, the company introduced a suite of new AI features branded as “Apple Intelligence,” aiming to modernize Siri, boost productivity, and bring generative capabilities into apps like Mail, Messages, and Notes. Still, critics have argued that Apple is late to the AI race, especially when compared to companies like Google and Microsoft, which have moved more aggressively in integrating AI into their platforms and cloud services.

Acquiring a startup like Perplexity would offer Apple a shortcut to leapfrog some of the developmental gaps and provide immediate access to advanced AI technologies already in use. It would also give Apple a potential entry point into the growing market for AI-based research assistants and enterprise-facing tools.

A Potential Game Changer for Siri

Siri, Apple’s digital assistant, has long been a point of contention for users, often criticized for its limited capabilities compared to newer AI assistants. With Perplexity’s natural language processing and knowledge-based engine, Apple could transform Siri into a far more powerful and reliable interface — one that can summarize, search, and respond intelligently in real time.

This move could reframe Siri not just as a reactive voice assistant, but as an active knowledge tool capable of holding conversations, answering complex questions, and integrating more deeply with user context and device data.

Industry Implications

If Apple were to move forward with a Perplexity acquisition, it could have ripple effects across the tech industry. The deal would likely put pressure on other major players to secure their positions in the fast-evolving AI search space. It could also disrupt Apple’s long-standing search partnership with Google, which currently pays Apple billions annually to remain the default search engine on Safari.

While Apple is known for making strategic acquisitions quietly and integrating new technologies without fanfare, acquiring a company of Perplexity’s scale and visibility would be one of its most high-profile AI investments to date.

What’s Next?

As of now, the talks remain internal and preliminary, and there is no confirmation that an acquisition will proceed. Apple has declined to comment on the matter, and Perplexity has not issued a public response. Still, the mere possibility of such a move highlights Apple’s increasing urgency to redefine its role in the AI landscape — not just as a hardware company, but as a serious competitor in intelligent software and services.
