Disney has confirmed it will fully phase out the standalone Hulu app in 2026 as part of a sweeping plan to consolidate its streaming services. Hulu’s extensive library of general entertainment content will be entirely absorbed into Disney+, marking the end of Hulu as a separate application and reflecting a broader trend of platform unification across the streaming industry.

The move comes as Disney pushes to simplify its streaming offerings, reduce operational costs, and position Disney+ as a comprehensive platform that serves a broader audience—including families, adults, and sports fans—all within a single app.

A Unified Streaming Experience

Once known for its family-friendly focus, Disney+ has gradually expanded to include more mature content through add-ons and bundles. With Hulu’s full integration, subscribers will have access to a significantly expanded library featuring original series, reality shows, premium cable content, next-day network programming, and films that previously lived exclusively on Hulu.

Disney executives described the decision as the “next evolution” of the company’s streaming strategy—one that puts everything under one roof while allowing for greater personalization. The integrated Disney+ app will feature designated hubs for Hulu content, enabling users to easily navigate between genres and viewing profiles without leaving the platform.

Hulu App to Be Phased Out; 'Fully Integrating' Into Disney+

The company emphasized that while the apps are merging, Hulu’s identity and programming will remain intact. Subscribers will still be able to choose between different pricing tiers, including ad-supported and ad-free versions, as well as bundled packages that include ESPN+ and other Disney-owned content.

Global Expansion of the Hulu Brand

The impact of this move won’t be limited to the United States. In a parallel effort to unify its streaming brand worldwide, Disney plans to expand Hulu’s presence internationally by replacing the “Star” content hub with the Hulu brand in countries where Star is currently used to distribute general entertainment content.

This global repositioning aims to bring brand consistency to Disney’s streaming platform and increase Hulu’s recognition as a worldwide entertainment brand. The change will be rolled out in phases starting later this year, with a full transition expected by mid-2026.

For many international subscribers, this will be their first time interacting with the Hulu brand, which has previously been limited to U.S. markets. With this expansion, Disney hopes to tap into Hulu’s strong reputation for adult-oriented series and original programming.

Business Strategy and Cost Savings

Behind the scenes, the integration of Hulu into Disney+ is part of a broader effort to streamline Disney’s digital operations. Running multiple apps with overlapping content, technology infrastructure, and support systems has proven expensive. By combining efforts under one platform, Disney expects to achieve significant cost savings in areas such as app development, content delivery, marketing, and customer service.

Advertising is also a major factor in the decision. Consolidating Hulu and Disney+ allows Disney to unify its ad technology and offer marketers cross-platform campaigns more easily. This will make it more competitive in a market where targeted digital advertising is increasingly important to revenue growth.

The company has already begun testing integrated advertising systems across both platforms and is expected to roll out more advanced ad formats and tools over the coming year. For advertisers, the appeal lies in reaching a larger, more diverse audience within a single app environment.

Transition for Current Hulu Users

Current Hulu subscribers will begin to see in-app notifications and emails detailing the transition over the coming months. Disney has stated that the change will be gradual and designed to minimize disruption. Eventually, all Hulu content will become accessible through the Disney+ app, and the standalone Hulu app will be deprecated.

For users subscribed to Hulu + Live TV—a package that includes live streaming of television channels—options are being explored to maintain access to live programming. Disney is expected to either build live capabilities into Disney+ or partner with another platform to continue delivering that service.

Despite the change in delivery, Hulu subscribers will not lose access to any of their favorite content. The full Hulu catalog will be preserved within Disney+, and user watch histories, profiles, and preferences will carry over during the transition.

Consumer Reactions and Industry Trends

The consolidation of Hulu into Disney+ comes at a time when viewers are increasingly frustrated with the growing number of streaming apps and fragmented content offerings. Many consumers have expressed a preference for fewer, more comprehensive platforms rather than managing multiple subscriptions and interfaces.

Industry analysts believe this move reflects a larger trend among streaming giants to simplify user experience and reduce platform fatigue. With competition intensifying and subscriber growth slowing across the industry, companies are looking for ways to differentiate themselves through better functionality, more value, and streamlined access to content.

Still, some users may be wary of the changes. The uniqueness of the Hulu interface and the curated feel of its content lineup have earned it a dedicated following. Disney will need to strike a careful balance between unification and maintaining the individuality that made Hulu successful in the first place.

Hulu will by fully integrated into Disney+ and phased out in 2026

Looking Ahead

As Disney prepares to sunset the Hulu app in 2026, the entertainment giant is signaling that it sees the future of streaming in consolidation, not fragmentation. With this move, Disney+ will become one of the most robust streaming platforms on the market—offering everything from Marvel and Pixar to prestige dramas, network comedies, reality shows, and live sports, all in one place.

The success of this strategy will depend on Disney’s ability to deliver a user-friendly experience that doesn’t overwhelm with content or complicate pricing. If done right, it could set a new standard for how streaming services evolve in a crowded and rapidly changing digital media landscape.

For now, subscribers can expect more updates, new app features, and a gradual rollout of the fully integrated Disney+ platform in the months ahead.
