Amazon’s Project Kuiper to Replace Sky Muster in NBN Satellite Upgrade

Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) is set to upgrade its satellite internet service by replacing the existing Sky Muster system with Amazon’s Project Kuiper. The new service aims to provide faster, more reliable broadband access to over 300,000 homes and businesses in regional, rural, and remote areas across the country.

Project Kuiper is a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites designed to offer high-speed internet with significantly lower latency compared to traditional geostationary satellites like Sky Muster. This upgrade promises download speeds of up to 400 Mbps for residential users and up to 1 Gbps for enterprise customers. Latency, which greatly affects real-time applications like video calls and online gaming, is expected to drop from around 600 milliseconds to just 20 milliseconds, marking a major improvement in user experience.

Sky Muster to be replaced with Amazon Project Kuiper

The transition will begin in mid-2026, starting with Tasmania before rolling out to other regions across Australia. NBN Co has assured existing Sky Muster customers that the current service will continue operating until about 2032, allowing a smooth and gradual migration process. Eligible households will receive professional installation of the new equipment at no upfront cost, ensuring accessibility and ease of transition.

This move represents a significant step forward in closing the digital divide for Australians living in hard-to-reach areas. By leveraging Amazon’s advanced satellite technology, the NBN aims to deliver affordable, reliable internet access that supports economic growth, education, health services, and overall quality of life in remote communities.

As the rollout progresses, NBN Co plans to work closely with service providers, regulators, and local stakeholders to finalize service plans, pricing, and customer support arrangements. This collaboration will help ensure that the new satellite service meets the needs of all Australians, paving the way for a more connected and inclusive future.

Tech Central Plan Big On Buzz Words But Light On Delivery

Sydney’s much‑touted Tech Central precinct has recently unveiled a glossy new strategy backed by $5 million in funding. While the plan is packed with buzz words like “innovation,” “economic growth,” and “live‑work‑play,” critics argue it lacks concrete steps and meaningful commitments to deliver on its ambitious promises.

Tech Central, covering six square kilometres between Haymarket, Camperdown, and South Eveleigh, is positioned as Sydney’s innovation hub, housing startups, universities, and tech giants. The new strategy aims to boost the area’s profile by improving infrastructure, attracting investment, and making the precinct a more vibrant place to live and work. However, beyond these broad goals, many details remain vague or absent.

Observers point out that past initiatives have promised much but delivered little, with ongoing issues like housing affordability, transport congestion, and lack of affordable office space yet to be fully addressed. The $5 million investment, while welcome, is viewed by some as a drop in the bucket compared to the scale of challenges facing the precinct.

Buzzword Evolution: From "Digitalization" and "Big Data" to "AI"

The plan leans heavily on buzz words and catchphrases but offers little in terms of timelines, measurable targets, or accountability mechanisms. Governance structures are mentioned but lack clarity on how different stakeholders will be coordinated or held responsible.

While the government emphasizes collaboration between industry, academia, and government, skeptics warn that without real investment and decisive action, Tech Central risks becoming another shiny label without substantive impact.

As Sydney competes with other global innovation hubs, the pressure is on to move beyond strategy documents and buzzwords. Delivering on Tech Central’s potential will require clear, concrete plans backed by meaningful resources—not just catchy slogans.

Google Expands Energy Demand Management Program as AI Strains Power Grid

Google is ramping up efforts to ease pressure on the electricity grid amid rising energy demands from artificial intelligence (AI) applications. The tech giant has partnered with several U.S. power utilities to reduce its data centers’ electricity usage during peak times, helping to stabilize the grid and prevent outages.

This energy demand management program allows Google to temporarily scale back or shift power consumption in its AI-focused data centers when the grid is under stress. By doing so, Google not only helps avoid blackouts but also reduces overall electricity costs and delays the need for new power plants or transmission upgrades. This approach is typically used by industries with heavy power loads but is now being adapted by tech companies due to the increasing power draw of AI workloads.

Beyond cutting consumption during peak hours, Google is also collaborating with energy grid operators to deploy AI-driven tools that improve grid reliability. These advanced systems analyze power usage in real time, optimizing the flow of electricity from renewable sources and balancing supply and demand more efficiently.

As AI technologies continue to grow, so does their impact on energy infrastructure. Google’s initiative reflects a broader industry shift toward sustainable computing practices and smarter energy management. By integrating flexible demand programs with AI-powered grid optimization, Google aims to support both its ambitious AI projects and global sustainability goals.

This proactive stance sets a precedent for other tech companies facing similar challenges. Balancing the energy requirements of AI with grid stability is critical as digital services become ever more central to everyday life. Google’s expanded program represents an important step in ensuring that the future of AI innovation is powered responsibly and reliably.
