TikTok Uninstalls Surge 150% After App’s U.S. Takeover, Raising Questions Over User Trust

The takeover, which shifted TikTok’s U.S. operations into a newly structured American-led entity, was designed to address years of political scrutiny over national security, data privacy, and foreign influence.

TikTok is facing an unexpected backlash in the United States after the completion of its long-anticipated U.S. takeover, with app uninstalls surging by nearly 150% in the days following the transition. The sharp rise in deletions suggests that while the ownership change may have eased regulatory pressure, it has also unsettled a significant segment of the platform’s user base.

The takeover, which shifted TikTok’s U.S. operations into a newly structured American-led entity, was designed to address years of political scrutiny over national security, data privacy, and foreign influence. However, rather than reassuring users, the move appears to have triggered fresh anxieties, particularly around data handling, content moderation, and the future direction of the platform.

TikTok uninstalls surge 150% after app's US takeover

A Sudden Spike in Deletions

Data from app-tracking firms shows that average daily uninstalls in the U.S. rose by approximately 150% compared to typical levels seen over the previous months. The spike occurred almost immediately after the new ownership structure was announced and implemented, indicating a direct link between the takeover and user behavior.

While TikTok remains one of the most widely used social media apps in the country, the surge in deletions reflects a growing sense of unease. Many users who removed the app cited confusion over revised policies, fear of increased surveillance, and frustration with technical disruptions that followed the transition.

Privacy Concerns Resurface

Ironically, the takeover was meant to put privacy fears to rest. By placing U.S. operations under American control, TikTok aimed to distance itself from accusations that user data could be accessed or influenced by foreign governments. Instead, updated policy notifications and permissions prompted renewed scrutiny.

Users reported being confronted with dense policy language and broad data collection disclosures, which reignited long-standing concerns about how much information the app collects and how it is used. For some, the takeover made these issues feel more immediate rather than resolved.

Digital rights advocates note that moments of transition often expose underlying mistrust. “Ownership changes force users to reassess their relationship with a platform,” said one industry analyst. “Even if nothing materially changes, perception matters.”

Technical Issues Add to Frustration

Compounding the situation were reports of technical glitches following the takeover. Users complained of delayed uploads, missing drafts, videos failing to load, and sudden drops in engagement. For creators who rely on TikTok for income and visibility, even brief disruptions can have serious consequences.

Several high-profile creators publicly announced temporary or permanent departures from the app, encouraging followers to connect with them on rival platforms. These announcements amplified the sense that TikTok was entering a period of instability.

Although the company has acknowledged the issues and promised rapid fixes, the initial disruptions left a mark. In the fast-moving world of social media, reliability is critical, and even short-term problems can push users to explore alternatives.

Fears of Content Control

Beyond privacy and performance, concerns about content moderation have also fueled the uninstall surge. Some users fear that new ownership could lead to stricter controls over political or social content, particularly in an election-sensitive environment.

Activists and creators have expressed worries that algorithmic changes or revised moderation policies could suppress certain viewpoints. While TikTok has denied plans to alter its content approach, skepticism remains, especially among users who already distrust large technology companies.

These fears, whether grounded or speculative, highlight how deeply platforms are intertwined with cultural and political expression—and how quickly trust can erode when that relationship feels threatened.

Competitors Seize the Moment

As TikTok navigates this turbulence, rival platforms are benefiting. Downloads of alternative short-form video apps have increased, with users experimenting with services that emphasize decentralization, stronger privacy controls, or creator-first monetization models.

Though none currently rival TikTok’s scale, the migration underscores how fluid social media loyalty can be. For younger users in particular, switching platforms is often less about abandoning one service entirely and more about hedging bets across multiple spaces.

What It Means for TikTok’s Future

Despite the uninstall surge, TikTok’s overall U.S. user base remains massive, and daily active usage has not yet shown a dramatic decline. Analysts caution against interpreting the spike as an immediate existential threat. However, they also warn that sustained distrust could eventually impact engagement, advertising revenue, and creator retention.

The U.S. takeover was meant to mark a new chapter for TikTok—one defined by regulatory stability and long-term security. Instead, the early days of the transition have revealed how fragile platform trust can be, especially when users feel excluded from or confused by major decisions.

For TikTok, the challenge now is not only technical but communicative: reassuring users that their data is safe, their voices are valued, and the app they rely on is not fundamentally changing in ways that undermine their trust.

Whether the uninstall surge proves to be a temporary protest or the start of a deeper shift will depend on how effectively TikTok addresses these concerns in the weeks ahead.
