In a landmark leadership change, Jason Citron, co-founder and long-time CEO of Discord, has officially announced that he will step down from his role later this month. After nearly a decade at the helm of the popular voice, video, and text communication platform, Citron is passing the baton to Humam Sakhnini, a seasoned executive with deep experience in the gaming and tech industry.

The move signals a significant transition for Discord, a company that has evolved from a niche service for gamers into one of the most influential communication platforms on the internet. Citron, who co-founded Discord in 2015 alongside Stan Vishnevskiy, was instrumental in shaping the platform’s culture and guiding it through years of explosive growth. Under his leadership, Discord amassed more than 200 million monthly active users and became a central hub for communities ranging from gaming to education, fandom, activism, and beyond.

Citron shared that his decision stems from a desire to let new leadership guide the company into its next era. “I’ve always seen myself as a builder,” he told employees. “And as Discord moves from building the foundation to expanding its global impact, it’s time for a different kind of leader—someone with experience scaling operations on a global stage.”

Humam Sakhnini, Citron’s successor, brings a strong background in both technology and entertainment. As the former vice chairman of Activision Blizzard, he helped steer one of the world’s biggest gaming companies through complex industry challenges. His appointment hints at Discord’s broader ambitions—not just as a communications app, but as a tech company poised to take on larger, more diversified challenges. With rumors of a potential IPO in the air, Sakhnini’s experience with large-scale corporate strategy could prove crucial.

For Citron, this is not a goodbye, but rather a step into a new role as board member and advisor. He plans to remain closely involved with the company, helping to shape long-term strategy and continuing to support the platform’s evolution.

Internally, the announcement was met with mixed emotions—sadness to see a beloved founder step aside, but also excitement about what the future holds. Sakhnini has already begun meeting with teams across the organization, emphasizing continuity, transparency, and a continued commitment to Discord’s core mission: to create space for everyone to find belonging.

As Discord enters this next phase, all eyes will be on how Sakhnini steers the ship. Will Discord remain true to its roots while expanding its reach? Will a public offering be next? One thing is clear: with fresh leadership and a solid foundation, the company is poised for yet another wave of transformation.
